Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics Guest Lecture with Tomás Kelly
ABOUT THE COLLABORATOR
Tomás is a DIT graduate and a Chartered Quantity Surveyor with over 25 years’ experience. Tomás completed his undergraduate studies in DIT in Construction Economics and subsequently completed an M. Phil research masters in the area of cost control in the construction industry.
Tomás is currently a Director of AECOM and has responsibility for the delivery of its cost management services across Galway, Limerick and Cork. Tomás has worked across the full spectrum of projects and in particular, the health and education sectors and providing consultancy advice in relation to public procurement and construction industry research.
Tomás is a significant contributor to the AECOM Ireland Annual Review publication and for the last number of years has been very willing to ‘give back’ to DIT / TU Dublin students through delivering an annual Guest Lecture as part of the final year Construction Economics module. The guest lecture provides an insight into the AECOM review of, and outlook for, the Irish construction industry, including key trends and industry issues.
Tomás has been actively involved in the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland throughout his career and is currently a Fellow member and Second Vice President.
THE COLLABORATION
Tomás has delivered an Annual Guest Lecture to final year students in the BSc Quantity Surveying and Construction Economics degree programme.
The Guest Lecture typically takes place in second semester after the January publication of the AECOM Ireland Annual Review. The lecture is delivered in person on campus at Bolton Street.
The lecture is primarily based on the AECOM Annual Review publication, providing up to date industry statistics, trends and issues facing the sector. In addition, Tomás provides an overview of his own academic connections with TU Dublin and Bolton Street and the depth and breadth of his career that has developed since then over the past 25+ years. This provides learners with an opportunity to gain insight into career opportunities within the profession both at home and abroad.
IMPACT AND BENEFITS
Tomás enjoys giving back to TU Dublin and Bolton Street students and sees it very much as a two-way engagement where in addition to passing on his knowledge and experience of the industry, he can get to catch up with lecturers and engage with students. In this engagement he seeks to learn about the latest developments they are learning in their academic course and also what are the key drivers and ambitions of students as they prepare to finish their degree and enter the workplace.
