Three BA Visual Communication final year students has been shortlisted for prestigious RSA Student Design Awards, 2024. 

Ying Qi Tang, Miriam Hurley and Sophie Pierce have all been shortlisted for their moving Image videos for the SDA awards to be held in London

Ying Qi Tang's 'SDA Scrapbook' is an animation project that aims to encourage greater participation in the Student Design Awards by showcasing the diverse winners and transformative power of design through a scrapbook-style narrative. It serves as an engaging and informative introduction to the Student Design Awards (SDA), connecting professionals from all walks of life with young innovators shaping the future. Using black and white photos and yellow paper combined with vibrant colours and digital adaptations, the project explores the evolution of scrapbooking. Narrated by Frank Warner, the founder of SDA, the scrapbook brings innovators' journeys to life, ending with an invitation for future creatives to get involved with RSA. Through sound design and dynamic storytelling, it creates a visually rich and engaging experience, ensuring the scrapbook remains a living tribute to creativity. 

Miriam Hurley

Miriam Hurley's 'Trailblazers to Future Shapers'  is an animation which response to the RSA Centenary Celebrations brief, commemorating the 100-year milestone of the SDA awards. It serves as a tribute to past innovations while looking forward to nurturing the next generation of design trailblazers. The aim of this project was to address the educational gap surrounding design careers, particularly prevalent in Irish secondary schools. The animation offers an accessible and engaging introduction to the world of design. Through the narrative structure, the animation takes the viewer on a journey through the evolution of design, using a character as their guide. By following the character’s experiences, viewers are encouraged to see themselves as contributors to ongoing design innovation, sparking curiosity and inspiring them to explore design as a viable and exciting career path.

Sophie Pierce

Sophie Pierce's A History of Making a Mark is a charcoal animation which highlights the legacy of the RSA student design awards and the impact that it continues to have on society.

The 2024 Student Design Award winners will be announced in June and there will be a public awards ceremony on 2 July in London. 

All of these works, along with all of the other graduating art and design students will be on display during the Graduate Exhibition in the East Quad, City Campus from the 31st May–8th June
