Research Impact & Commercial Outputs
There are many examples of how our research created an impact with business and industry, in particular in the areas of science, technology and engineering. Our location in the heart of South County Dublin, home to over 60% of industries in Dublin, is key to that contribution. The international collaborations that researchers have in the fields of Computing and Experimental Sciences means that our research publications and outputs also gather attention globally.
There has been a concerted move, in recent years, towards research to support the industry and towards more applied and commercial R&D. This has led to the establishment of a commercial wing MiCRA (Microsensors for Clinical Research and Analysis). MiCRA-Biodiagnostics is part of Enterprise Ireland’s Technology Gateway Network, which provides technology solutions and support to SME’s and specialises in the development of microsensors for the food, pharmaceutical, diagnostics, biotechnology, environmental, human and animal healthcare and agriculture sectors.
Our researchers have a number of patented products in the pharmaceutical and diagnostic arenas. In 2017, the Minister for Education opened a new state of the art laboratory in photovoltaic technology on the campus. The new laboratory is a collaboration between Engineering Researchers and the industry partner, Nines Engineering.
