Module Overview

Biology 1

This module aims to develop the students' understanding of cell structure and how structure informs function. It aims to provide an understanding of human physiology to underpin future learning in biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. The subject also aims to develop an appreciation of the scope of the biological sciences and an interest in current developments particularly in biotechnology and biophramaceuticals.

Definition & Classification of Living Organisms

The characteristcs of life, the classification of living things; biodiversity

The Study of Cellular structure & function

Eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, a comparison of plant and animal cells, cell structure and function, cell membranes and organelles, cell division: mitosis and meiosis; an introduction to microscopy`for the examination of cells and tissues.

The Genetic Basis of Life

Patterns of gene inheritance: Mendel's laws, genetic disorders.

Topics in Human Physiology

Tissues and organ systems: the digestive system and an overview of human nutrition, the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic and immune systems, the respiratory system, the genito-urinary systems, the nervous system; the muscular-skeletal system and the endocrine system. Connective tissues. The concept of homeostasis,

Current topics in Biotechnology

Introduction to biotechnology and bioanalysis, gene cloning, biopharmaceuticals.

Lectures are delivered using PowerPoint slides with some videos and animations. There are in-class questions and answers to aid understanding. Concepts are also illustrated using examples from Semester 1 labs to help students link their practical and theory learning.

While the assessments have a summative purpose, the emphasis is on the formative. The closed-book CA tests provides exam-style practice in a low-stakes format. CA feedback sessions as part of the Biology tutorials aim to encourage in-depth learning over surface learning and foster reflection on the learning process.

The project CA links to their information and communication skills development across their first modules, particularly the Critical Skills Development module.
