Module Overview

Professional Development

The aim of this module is to develop the student's awareness of the social, ethical and legal aspects in the context of civil and structural engineering, within the construction industry. It will also develop the skills to effectively plan projects, utilising BIM and other project management techniques and how to incorporate good health and safety practices.

It will cover a number of areas including; the ethical responsibilities of a civil / structural engineer using code of ethics as a guide, construction contract law which will make students aware of the engineer's role as a professional, offering services to a client in the construction industry and of the legal framework within which construction projects exist, building information modelling and project management theory, as well as the application of health and safety legislation.

Students will be assessed by completing a mixture of individual and group projects while gaining a holistic understanding of various topics and how they relate to the construction industry.

Health and Safety
Health and Safety Legislation in Ireland with Particular Emphasis on the Construction Industry


Contract Law
Introduction to Contract Law in the Construction Industry. The Basic Concepts of Contract Law – Offer,
Acceptance and Consideration. The roles of Client, Designer, Contractor and Sub-Contractor. Vitiating
Factors within a Contract. Examples drawn from Case Studies in the Construction Industry.


Ethics in engineering
The ethical guidelines as published by Engineers Ireland. Review and analysis of ethical case studies
