Module Overview

Highway Engineering

The module entails the planning, financing, analysis, design and construction of highway and street networks for all modes of transport (walking/cycling/bus/tram/vehicles), in both urban and rural locations. This includes use of Sustainable & Equitable Transport. The module is delivered so that the student is introduced to the structure of this process from the inception of a scheme to its commissioning. The application of these theoretical principles to real-life transportation problems, in a multi-modal context, is addressed. The students demonstrate competence through exam performance.

Highway & Transport Pavement Design

Flexible & rigid pavements, traffic loading computation, permeable surfaces, bus lanes, greenways

4 hours scheduled time weekly featuring Lectures, formative tutorials/exercises, practice exam questions in each class. The approach is to foster and encourage active and independent learning, as required by graduates once they enter the engineering profession.

Scheduled class time will include Guest lectures from industry specialists and site visits.

Site visit to The Wayfinding Centre (with Vision Ireland) will teach students about the importance of accessibility in infrastructural design – an area often overlooked by engineers.

Site Visits to Transportation Infrastructure construction sites will also feature as available
