Determination of forces and deformations in simple structural frames and trusses and in more unusual structural forms e.g. cables and compound structures using classical and modern computer-based methods of structural analysis which will be supported by approximate methods and qualitative methods of analysis of structures. The student will be introduced to structural dynamics.
To enable the student to analyse a wide range of structures in order to evaluate the deformations and forces required for design and construction. To prepare the student to perform computer-based analyses typically used in practice.
- Review and reuse of Qualitative Analysis Methods.
- Analysis of structures subject to combined bending and axial loads using Virtual Work.
- Matrix stiffness method.
- Introduction to structural dynamics – SDOF free and forced Vibrations; MDOF free vibrations.
- Use of appropriate structural analysis software to compare against hand calculations.
Each topic will be introduced in a lecture format in which the theory and sample solutions are covered. The tutorials sessions will be utilised to advance continuous assessment assignments in an environment suitable to carry out hand calculations or computer based structural analysis.
This module will rely on student engagement on content uploaded to the virtual learning environment. This content may consist of online quizzes, discussion groups and additional lecture content.
