Management Principles and Site Organisation

This module is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of management principles and function and the skills for organising and controlling on-site resources and procedures.

Module Aim:
 To introduce the principles and function of management.
 To develop management skills.
 To provide an introduction to the knowledge and skills for organising and controlling resources for
on-site activities at first line management level
 To develop understanding of requirements and responsibilities of contractors in construction
activities.
To develop written communications skills in the form of reports.

Management Principles:
 Introduction to management history.
 Management functions
 Management skills and management levels
 Management and Leadership.
 Introduction to human resources management: The new HRM: emergence and models.
 Principles of delegation-authority, responsibility, accountability, negotiation.
 Organisations and organisational structures: site organisational and company organisational
structure as a mechanism for effective organisation, control and communication.
 Factors influencing the organisational structure of a construction company.
 Time management and time management techniques.
Site Organisation:
 Materials and Plant: Ordering procedures, planning and organising, economic use, waste
management and control.
 Forecast and control labour plant and material.
Site Organisation and Control: Operating procedures, record keeping, site diary, delegation,
motivation, employee appraisal, team work, planning -co-ordinating work groups, safe working
practices, progress reporting, reporting methods and procedures, communication methods and
skills, site meetings, recruitment and selection procedures, disciplinary procedures, site induction,
security and safety of the work place, site safety records, working methods for optimum
performance.
