This module is designed to develop knowledge and understanding of construction project organisational procedures and the principles and application of management and the legislative constraints and conditions in construction activities.
The module also provides an opportunity for students to study and develop knowledge of the duties and responsibilities of employers and contractors with regard to safety & waste management, environmental, planning and other legislative issues.
The module will develop the knowledge and skills for effective and efficient management of construction projects.
Contract Organisation:
• The building process: inception, design, construction
• Contract documentation and records: drawings, specifications, bill of quantities, schedules, day-works, variations, site records, information schedules.
• Contractors pre-tender and preparation procedures: examination of specification, site inspections, preparation of method statements, design, specification and buildability issues.
• Pre-construction preparation procedures: method statements, pre-contract schedules, site organisational structure, contract programme.
• Risk assessment techniques and preparation of safety method statements.
• Maintaining site safety records, tool-box talks, developing safety culture initiatives.
• Sub-contractor performance reports.
• Site layout and organisation for efficiency of operation and control.
• Preparing RFI`s
• Quality management in construction and principles of `total quality management`, ISO19001, 14001 etc.
• Quality and environmental controls.
Legislation:
• Safety legislation: working on or near occupied premises, public and private nuisance and the site managers role and responsibilities in this regard.
• Employment legislation: duties and responsibilities of employers.
• Waste legislation: duties and responsibilities of contractors.
• Environmental controls: National and EU legislation such as noise and nuisance. The role and responsibilities of statutory authorities and of the design and construction team. Sustainability issues, waste generation and disposal issues, construction and the environmental impact.
• Planning and Development Act and Regulations
• Building Control Act and Regulations.
