Building Services 2

The aim of this module is to develop a firm knowledge and understanding of the principles of design, installation and maintenance of building services for commercial and industrial buildings This intermediate module covers the services commonly provided in modern buildings. It deals with the principals of design, installation techniques and the associated building regulations employed in today’s Building Services industry. It explores the characteristics of the services and associated appliances. Difficulties associated with the accommodation and the installation of services within buildings and safety requirements for both their installation and operation is emphasised It is aimed at professionals involved in the implementation and management of construction projects other than building service engineers.

ABOVE DRAINAGE AND SANITATION Sanitation and waste disposal systems. Types of drainage systems, principles of design and installation, testing methods.

HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEMS Design, installation and maintenance

HEATING Types of systems: Design, installation, operation and maintenance, heat loss calculations, design temperatures, controls, fuels, flues.

VENTILATION / AIR CONDITIONING Types of systems: Design, installation, operation, equipment selection and maintenance.

NEW TECHNOLOGY Energy saving and sustainable technologies, ie solar, heat pumps, wood pellets. Understanding of the 45 different systems, their requirements and design criteria.

GAS SERVICES Design, installation and distribution, consumer controls, appliances, safety factors.

FIRE CONTROL SYSTEMS Sprinkler installations and types of systems, wet and dry risers, hose reel installations and siting, fire brigade requirements, building requirements, types of fire extinguishers.

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS Principles of design and installation. Materials and components. Three phase supply line and phase voltages, circuit breakers, fuses, earthing, conductor and cable rating, methods of underground wiring, switching, radial and ring circuits.
