Module Overview

Workplace Stress and Well-Being

In this module, the student is taught how to recognise and cope with work-related stress unique to the construction sector while managing building projects. The module introduces the student to basic workplace psychology and analyses negative and positive workplace stress. The module is presented to the student through formal lectures which is accompanied by an analysis of various real-life case studies. The causes, effects and coping strategies associated with workplace stress are examined in detail. In addition, the student is introduced to the importance of leadership and management in controlling and abating workplace stress for employees.

Analysis of workplace stress, the biology of stress and how the human body copes with stress.

Analyse the causes of workplace stress unique to the construction sector, including, deadlines, penalty clauses, the sequential nature of the sector, workload, the gender profile of the sector and the multiple stakeholders a construction manager might have to interact with.

Examine of the role of leadership and how good leadership can reduce stress in an organisation.

Examine the effects of workplace stress, including illness, well-being, productivity, bullying, harassment, presenteeism, and absenteeism

Identify methods of coping with workplace stress to include primary, secondary, and tertiary coping strategies

Staying healthy under stress, incorporating good sleep patterns, good diet, and wellbeing practices

Conflict resolution, conflict management, and conflict transformation, how disputes begin and are resolved, to include arbitration and mediation.

Conduct a conflict resolution process and highlight the importance of good communication in the process of conflict resolution.

The module will include lectures, case studies, role plays, classroom discussion and possibly online lectures.
