Module Overview

Visual Design Fundamentals

The Visual Design Fundamentals module equips learners with core visual communication skills and competencies, encompassing various disciplines such as graphic design, information design, instructional design, and visual storytelling. Learners will develop a process-driven foundation in visual communication, enabling them to research, ideate, evaluate, and technically realise design concepts. Learners will gain the confidence to navigate design challenges while developing a critical mindset to question design decisions and explore alternative applications.

Introduction to Visual Design

• Overview of visual communication and its significance in design• Historical and contemporary influences in design practice• Understanding of current context and future directions of visual design• Components of effective visual communication

Visual Design Process

• Introduction to the visual design process and phases• Interpreting design briefs, establishing objectives and defining deliverables• Discovery methods for gathering and analysing visual research • Developing and iterating visual ideas and concepts with design software • Delivering digital design outputs

The Elements and Principles of Design

• The elements and principles of visual design • Colour theory • Grid systems and layout • Typography basics and designing with type• Working with images and illustration

Asset Management

• Image formats • Typefaces and • Export Formats• File and asset management

Presentation and Communication

• Conceptualisation & idea generation of effective presentation techniques for visual design concepts• Evaluation through reflection and design critique
