The User Experience (UX) Design module equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of the roles, foundations, principles, processes and methods involved in creating successful user experiences. Throughout the module, learners will explore the significance of UX design in driving innovation, enhancing interactions, and designing products and services that solve customer problems and align to business and organisational objectives. Learners will have the opportunity to employ a diverse range of UX tools and techniques to generate and effectively communicate design ideas. The module will cover all phases of the UX design process, guiding learners through user research and analysis, prototyping and testing, and final implementation and evaluation stages.
Introduction to User Experience (UX) Design
• Definition and importance of UX design in the digital landscape• Overview of UX design and its importance in creating effective products and services• Roles, foundations, and principles of UX design• Understanding the UX design process and its phases• Understanding the ethical considerations and social impact of user experience design
User Research and Synthesis
• Conducting user research to gain insights into user needs, behaviours, goals, and preferences• Analysing user data and synthesising findings to inform design decisions• Applying user goals, personas and user journey mapping techniques• Transforming insights into ideas• Avoiding cognitive bias in the design of user experiences
Design and Prototyping
• Introduction digital accessibility best practices.• Introduction to universal design principles • Key principles of information architecture for effective content design through techniques like tree testing, card sorting, content mapping and interactive flows• Understanding visual hierarchy, its role in layout and composition, and its impact on user attention and engagement• Rapid prototyping through sketching and wireframing• Interactive prototyping techniques • Annotating designs & prototypes
Evaluation Techniques
• Facilitating and collating peer feedback through design critique• Concept testing to evaluate the desirability of design solutions• Conducting user testing to evaluate the effectiveness and usability of design solutions• Incorporating user feedback to refine and improve prototypes• Measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of UX solutions against defined metrics
Implementation, Evaluation and Communication
• Communicating the value of UX in business, organisational or social contexts• Presenting and effectively communicating design concepts and solutions
The module employs lectures, workshops, practical exercises, critique sessions and prototyping activities. Learners actively engage in the design process, receive feedback, collaborate with peers to enhance their understanding and skills in user experience design.
Assessment for the module is suitable for integration with complementary modules, or with an external business, community or civic sponsor. Assessment outputs may be suitable for inclusion in a digital design portfolio.
