Module Overview

Lab Skills III for HC in Applied Chemistry

The purpose of this module is to develop the student's practical skills in Drug Formulation, Organic chemistry, and Pharma Analysis as well as their scientific communication skills

Module Code

LSKI H1005

ECTS Credits

*Curricular information is subject to change

Introduction to Chromatography

Introduction to basic instrumentation used for GC and LC analysis

Organic Chemistry

Prepare simple drug-type compounds, purify organic compounds using recrystallisation and distillation; work with low temperature reactions and reaction control; separate mixtures of compounds using acid/base chemistry and liquid extraction; perform compound characterisation using melting point, TLC, and IR spectroscopy; measure optical activity using polarimetry.

Drug Delivery/Formulation

Drug Delivery/Formulation - A series of laboratory practical sessions will be provided to teach the essential stages involved in the manufacture of dosage forms. These will support and reflect the aims and learning outcomes of the theory module. The practical course will enable students to: Determine the physiochemical properties and stability of drugs; Prepare oral dosage and semi-solid formulations; Analyse physical and chemical properties of the formulations; Trouble shoot processes.

Information systems; Library and Internet resources; Introduction to scientific journal publications; Citation and referencing methods; Report writing; Plagiarism; The scientific process; Effective oral presentation skills; Preparation of curriculum vitae and interview skills.
