Materials Science

This module aims to provide the students with the resources to enable them to: Evaluate the properties of polymer, ceramic and composite materials on the basis of their microstructure; Appreciate the function of modern high-tech materials used in microelectronic, semiconductor, biomedical, sensor and data storage applications.

Polymeric Materials:

Molecular structure, morphology, thermal behaviour, mechanical behaviour, electrical properties, degradation mechanisms, additives, adhesives, coatings, nanofabrication, photolithography and soft lithography.

Ceramics

Advanced (high performance)ceramics, chemical structure and microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties.

Composites:

High performance composites, recyclability and green composites

Biomaterials:

Range of materials: polymers, ceramics and composites;structure and function; advances is surface treatment for biocompatibility.

Magnetic Properties:

Origin of magnetism; magnetic properties of materials and magnetic storage media

Semiconducting Materials:

Integrated circuitry; polymer and ceramic materials as conductors and as dielectrics in the semiconductor industry.
