This module focuses on supporting the student to propose, research, design, and implement prototypes of a Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DS/AI) project (or something in an allied domain) to demonstrate the level of knowledge that they have gained over the course of their studies. The student is expected to be self-motivated so as to drive this work through to completion. They are expected to identify the key areas of research and development for the project and to make real decisions that will ultimately affect the end-deliverables. The project deliverables will be an interim report that will demonstrate the student’s work and their ability to communicate key aspects of the project.
All module content will be accessible on Brightspace. Within this online environment, participants will also be required to participate in online discussions and collaborative tasks and submit work for assessment and feedback.
Support: Participants must be prepared to commit a significant amount of time to the module.
Regular Seminars
Regular seminars will be presented on a range of topics, including:• Writing a Project Proposal, including scope, ethics, feasibility and approach• How to Manage your Time• What is Plagiarism?• Datasets: Creating, Collecting, and Collating• How to research and critically review• Academic Writing• Diagramming and Visualization• Developing Prototypes
The project module involves a combination of seminars, self-paced work, research, and weekly meetings with their assigned supervisor. This is primarily a self-learning module with the supervisor providing guidance and feedback to the student throughout the project. The student is expected to state at the outset the objectives for the project and to meet some of these objectives in the prototypes developed. The student is also given explicit verbal feedback at the Interim report stage which includes a presentation by the student on the work completed and the work planned in the future. In addition to the dedicated supervisory resources the School will also provide a second reader for the purposes of assessing the student’s work.
