Advanced Research Methods & Practice 1

This module aims to substantially develop students’ skills of independent study demonstrated through the production of a dissertation or project. It aims to ensure students gain a detailed knowledge of their chosen topic integrating theoretical concepts across all social care modules. It aims to allow students to gain an understanding of the importance of research skills and an evidence based approach to practice.

Research in Social Care

Principles of qualitative and quantitative methodologies; Value of methods relevant to different areas of study and rationale for critical social care research; conducting research in social care.

Research design issues, Selection and identification of research problem(s).

Layout of proposal: aims of study and clarification of the research topic and strategy; hypothesis; design and methodology; ethical considerations; reliability, validity, feasibility; Quality of written and oral Presentation; Dissemination of research findings; Journals, articles, conferences.

Ethics in social research

The Social care practitioner and the research approach; Confidentiality, mutual interests; Research translated into practice; Service user consent; Power issues (ownership of research); Advocacy

Literature Review

Presentation and structure of a literature review; Focus on writing style; Linking Literature to the research question; How to access locate/find and literature; Draftng and re-drafting Literature Review.
