The aim of this module is to
- Provide an understanding of the deformability of structures and the principles of the elastic analysis of simple indeterminate structures.
- Determine forces and deformations in simple structural frames, indeterminate to one degree.

- Review of bending moment, shear force and deflected shape.
- Stability, static determinacy and indeterminacy.
- Kinematic indeterminacy.
- Qualitative Analysis of structures.
- Analysis of indeterminate structures, including sway frames using:
- Mohr’s theorems (Moment-area method);
- Moment distribution.
- Slope and deflection using:
- Mohr’s theorems (Moment-area method)
- Double Integration method (Macaulay’s method)
- Introduction to Virtual Work methods.
- Qualitative analysis using model structures
- Deflections of beams and frames
- Model make and break
Laboratory:
