Module Overview

Design of Structures, Concrete

Advanced design methods for reinforced concrete structures, prestressed concrete structures and masonry leading to Professional Membership of the I.E.I and/or I.Struct.E.

The aims of this module are:

• To show the fundamentals of flat slab behaviour and give methods for the design of flat slabs in accordance with the Eurocode for concrete, EC2.

• To introduce Pre-stressed Concrete (Pre- and Post-Tensioning) and give methods for designing prestressed concrete in accordance with the Eurocode for concrete, EC2.

• To give methods for calculating crack widths and deflections in concrete structures, in accordance with EC2.

• To introduce Masonry design to IS 325 and the Eurocode For Masonry Design (EC6).

• Prestressed Concrete Design : Principles of Prestressed Concrete. Design for Serviceability Limit State -Magnel Diagrams. Composite elements. Losses in Prestress. Design for the Ultimate Limit State in Bending and Shear. Deflections - a rigorous approach to short and long term deflections.

• Flat Slab Structures : Methods of frame analysis. Division of Moments into panels. Punching Shear – effect of drops and flared heads.

• Yield Line Analysis : One- and two- dimensional collapse mechanisms. Virtual work equation. Transformation of ordinary reinforced slabs to isometric slabs, including the effect of skew reinforcement.

• Crack Width Calculations : methods of calculating crack widths and controlling crack widths.

• Design of Blockwork to IS35 &EC6 : Vertically loaded walls. The effect of slenderness and wind loads on vertically loaded walls. Design of block panels to resist lateral loads. Design of masonry walls under concentrated loads. Design of Masonry building for robustness.

The module is delivered through a series of lectures and design activities as well as student self-directed learning.
