Module Overview

Work Based Learning 1

This module will provide students with practical experience in real-world construction management. The student will be required to be in a construction-related employment before commencing the programme.  The aim of the module is to enable students to apply theoretical knowledge gained during their studies to professional practice. The placement will provide students with the opportunity to develop their transferable and management skills as well as their occupational skills. The module will also enhance students’ understanding of the roles and responsibilities within a construction management setting and facilitate the development of professional networks and career opportunities.

As part of the application process to the programme the student will be in employment in a relevant construction role. The placement will be divided into 3 distinct stages as set out below.

Pre-Placement Preparation:

  • Introduction to Work-Based Learning (WBL)
  • Setting learning objectives and goals for the placement
  • Health and safety in the workplace

During Placement:

  • The student should be working in a construction management role for the duration of the module.
  • Regular progress meetings with a workplace supervisor and academic mentor
  • Application of academic knowledge to practical tasks
  • Participation in construction project meetings and activities
  • Development of technical and soft skills relevant to construction management
  • Completion of a reflective journal documenting daily activities, learning experiences, and challenges

Post-Placement:

  • Reflection and evaluation of the work placement experience
  • Preparation and presentation of a professional portfolio
  • Group debriefing sessions to share experiences and insights

Feedback from workplace supervisor and academic mentor

While it is evident that the work placement experiences will differ from student to student, it is expected that each placement will:

  • Provide an opportunity where students will engage in supervised work-based learning, working closely with industry professionals in a construction management role.
  • Provide an opportunity to observe the practical application of theoretical knowledge and skills;
  • Provide ongoing support from an academic mentor and workplace supervisor.
  • Inform students on the practices and operations of a company
  • Guide on creating a professional portfolio showcasing skills and experiences.

Module Evaluation: The module will be evaluated in line with the TU Dublin Quality Assurance processes and industry best practices. The following methods will be adopted to ensure the module is fit for purpose and continuously improving.  

  • Student Feedback: Regular feedback sessions with students to assess the effectiveness of the module and identify areas for improvement.

Employer Feedback: Evaluation from workplace supervisors on the performance and preparedness of students.

Academic Review: Continuous review and update of module content based on current industry trends and academic research.
