Business Studies / Staidéar Gnó

Course Title:  Bachelor of Business Studies (Honours) / BBS (Honours) in Business Studies (Part Time)

  • Leaving Certificate with passes in not less than six subjects, two of which should be at Grade C3 or better on higher level papers.
  • The programme operates a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) scheme meaning applicants with substantial work experience at an appropriate level but who do not have the minimum qualifications may be accepted.
  • Applicants in the main are mature students, already employed, who are seeking formal qualifications to enhance a career in the Business disciplines of Accounting & Finance, Financial Services & Marketing.

The part-time Bachelor Degree in Business Studies will develop the knowledge and skills - technical, analytical, conceptual, interpersonal and intrapersonal - necessary to advance the learner’s business. Leading edge business thinking is addressed throughout in the context of best contemporary practice. There is a particular concern to ensure students understand the different dynamics of the modern business world through the use of the most recent and relevant tools in management practice. To facilitate this, a diverse range of learning experiences are utilised.

This course has been designed to meet the demand for a flexible, undergraduate honours degree in business, with modules in core business studies subjects and specialist subjects across Accounting and Finance and Marketing streams. The programme is modularised allowing students a range of choices to meet their future needs (streams and modules are subject to demand and timetable restrictions). It allows them to select the skills, knowledge and attributes that they believe will be required of them upon graduation.

This coures is being restructured currently so there is no intake into Year 1, 2 or 3.

The course has been designed primarily to equip graduates for progression in executive positions in their career and at the same time provide them with a foundation for further academic or professional study in their chosen stream area. In most streams TU Dublin can offer students opportunities to pursue further postgraduate studies in full-time and/or part-time modes.

I consider that the degree has helped my career as I have found that I have been able to apply a lot of what I learnt in the classroom in a practical way in the workplace. I found that the course content was interesting, informative and varied and the course provided me with some very good insights into many aspects of the business environment. I found that practically all the subjects over the four years were very relevant but the elements of the programme which I found particularly useful and apply regularly in my role are the management modules, for example, Management in Year 1, Organisational Change in Year 3 and Strategic Management in Year 4. I think the course showed evidence of subjects that I studied over the four years linking into each other and providing a base for future study and in the final year, I could see how it was all ‘coming together’.  An example of how I think the course benefitted me in my career is that just a month before I sat my final exams for the degree, I was promoted to my current role of Records Manager (April 2008) which was three grades higher than the role I was in.  I think that the degree did act as a contributing factor to my success in being appointed to the role.

I went straight on after the degree to study for a 2 year part-time Masters in Business Administration in DCU which I am due to finish next week.  Apart from providing me with the qualifications necessary to embark on the MBA, I have found that the degree provided me with a very good knowledge base for the modules I have studied on the MBA.  I found during the MBA that I may have had a slight advantage over some of the other students as I had already covered a lot of the groundwork, i.e. I had prior knowledge and understanding of a lot of the management concepts from my degree with DIT.

In reflecting back on my experience, I was apprehensive at first about returning to study part-time in addition to working fulltime, but I am very happy now that I completed the degree as I found it to be very beneficial to me both in my career progression and from a personal perspective."
