Electrical Services Engineering Technician / Innealtóireacht Seirbhísí Leictreachais

Course Title:  Higher Certificate - (Electrical Services Engineering) in Electrical Services Engineering Technician  (Part Time)

Applicants must have experience working in the Electrical Services Industry. Exemption will be granted from year 1 to students undertaking electrical apprenticeship programmes subject to certain criteria.

This is a three-year part-time course designed to prepare students for careers as Electrical Services Engineering Technicians. The programme has been designed in close consultation with the Electrical Services Industry. Students will become computer literate and will also develop expertise in the technical areas necessary to use software packages for electrical design. The course will provide a wide knowledge base, which will enable the student to specialise in different areas of interest. Subjects include the following: AutoCAD, Industrial Electronics & PLC control, Computer Applications, Project Management and Electrical Estimating, Electrical Services Design, Electrical Services Plant, Building services. The final year includes a major project.

Learning Outcome
Programme aimsThe aims of the programme are to:
  • Provide a deep seated learning environment for students
  • Produce graduates who will exercise technical skills in a scientific and practical way, which will enable them to perform to a high level of expertise in modern industry
  • Enable graduates to develop communication, personal and interpersonal skills
  • Educate graduates on the environmental impact of energy use
  • Give graduates the knowledge skills and competence  to operate plant and equipment in the most energy efficient way.
  • Enable graduates to integrate renewable energy technologies in buildings
  • Allow linkage and transfer to TU Dublin Electrical, Building Services and other engineering  programmes within the TUDublin and further afield
Programme Learning Outcomes:

Having completed the course the students will be able to:

  • Work as a technical member of a design team
  • Design industrial and commercial electrical installations
  • Use BIM software to produce and revise technical drawings
  • Design and operate automated systems for industrial plant
  • Employ standard estimating and tendering techniques for electrical services applications
  • Implement data transfer systems used for computer control
  • Employ modern application software such as Excel, Amtech, Dialux, or equivalent software, etc.
  • Write technical reports using Power Point, Word etc.
  • Develop a personal career portfolio
  • Implement the design and control of modern building environments
  • Prepare safety technical reports and carry out risk assessments
  • Configure machine /human interfaces
  • Demonstrate capability in problem solving, analysis, and decision making
  • Provide technical systems support for manufacturing industries
  • Describe and compare different renewable energy technologies suitable for integration in buildings
  • Implement renewable energy system for a building
  • Evaluate the environmental impact of energy use

Electrical Services Technicians enjoy a very varied, interesting and well paid work environment. There are so many aspects in which you can develop an interest and subsequently specialise. These can include: working in an electrical design office, for an electrical contractor, as engineering systems support in the manufacturing sector, perhaps in technical sales support, project management, or in the provision of industrial services. The work invariably involves both office based and site/location activity.

This programme is very well recognised in industry with a high percentage of our graduates securing employment both domestically and internationally. The course in conjunction with the follow-on BEng Tech Electrical Services Engineering is accredited by Engineers Ireland as BEng Tech, which facilitates world-wide recognition of the qualification, something that is becoming increasingly relevant in today’s society. The programme also has a close relationship with the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).
