Healthcare and engineering professionals work collaboratively on projects to develop innovative ways of improving our lives with new medical devices and machines. Working with clinical medical practitioners, biomedical engineers develop laser systems used in eye and cardiovascular surgery. The biomedical engineering sector employs over 28,000 people in 160 companies in Ireland.
This innovative programme was developed to address the needs of the medical technology industry. It will equip you for diverse career paths, working as part of a design team with medical professionals, in hospitals, in research centres or in the manufacture of exciting new medical devices in Ireland and internationally.
The course integrates the study of anatomy and physiology with traditional engineering subjects. Project work is carried out in conjunction with industry and surgeons from the Children's Hospital Crumlin, Tallaght Hospital, the Mater Hospital and Santry Sports Clinic. Areas studied include Anatomy and Physiology, Biomechanics, Biomaterials and Medical Device Design.
Study Abroad Opportunities:
In year 2 or 3, there are opportunities to study abroad under the Erasmus Programme for a semster or one year in France, Germany, Austria or Spain.
