English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your English language proficiency as detailed on our website. Applicants for this course should have a minimum IELTS (Academic Version) English Proficiency of 6 overall (or equivalent) with nothing less than 6 in each component.

Course Description

Civil engineers work on the design and construction of buildings and structures, highways, bridges, water supply and treatment systems. 

This course will equip you with the skills you need to work as a civil engineering technologist, carrying out much of the detailed analytical and design specifications in a building project. You’ll develop your mathematical and analytical skills to solve many of the problems encountered in the broader civil engineering industry.

• Management & Practice
• Civil Engineering Procedures & Practice

Each year of the course is delivered over two semesters with examinations at the end of each semester.

At the end of Year 2, you can choose either Civil/Environmental or Structural Engineering options for Year 3.

You can expect a varied and challenging career with a good salary, secure employment and good promotion opportunities.

Work Placement

During the summer after Year 2, you can undertake a work placement with an engineering employer. On successful completion of this placement, you can use this work-based learning to accumulate a 5 ECTS module, which can be considered in your academic record in Year 3.

On successful completion, you can also continue your studies on a Level 8 course either in TU Dublin or elsewhere. And, if you successfully complete Year 2 and do not wish to progress to third year, you’ll receive a Higher Certificate award.

Employment prospects are excellent. Career paths include opportunities in consulting engineering design offices, contracting, materials supply and as building site managers. Some graduates can expect to be in private practice or working on behalf of national and local authorities.

To qualify for Advanced Entry applicants must be currently studying, completing, or have successfully completed, studies at Level 6, 7 or 8 in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) or an equivalent, in a related area. You must demonstrate by providing transcripts of results that you have achieved the learning outcomes for each stage you wish to advance past, for example:

• To enter Year 2 via Advanced Entry, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Year 1.
• For entry to Year 3, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Years 1 and 2.
• For entry to Year 4, you must demonstrate that you have met the learning outcomes for Years 1, 2, and 3.

One of the main reasons I chose TU Dublin was due to its emphasis on the practical aspects of civil and structural engineering. Every module that was taught during my years were very specific and essential to the knowledge required in the work industry. The practical approach easily translated well to my graduate rotation course at Roughan & O’Donovan.
