Documentary photography has been historically defined in terms of its connection with particular kinds of social investigation and its claim to be a catalyst for social change. In recent years photographers have revised and transformed traditional documentary photography methods influenced by theoretical debates that challenged its claim of neutrality or social emancipation. Contemporary documentary photography is a complex hybrid form, informed within a discursive field and often defined by engagement with social and political issues. This module examines the origins of socially concerned photographic practices and introduces contemporary visual strategies to represent culturally significant social and political societal issues.
