Relay For Life

Relay for life one day event poster

TU Dublin is hosting a one-day Relay for Life fundraiser festival for Irish Cancer Society in Grangegorman main Campus this Friday 1st of April from 2 - 10pm behind St Laurences Church.

Relay for Life is one of Irish Cancer Society's national campaigns where Communities come together in teams in solidarity to remember those lost to cancer, celebrate those who've survived and to fight back shoulder to shoulder with those fighting the battle by raising funds and awareness of all the free services provided by Irish Cancer Society.

What does a Team have to do?

The event focuses on a set walking route where team members take turns walking around the route to symbolise the ongoing fight against cancer for the duration of the event, hence the "Relay" part of the event to raise funds.

Throughout the event we have food trucks, live music, comedy sessions, music, yoga, alternative entertainment - drink tea & draw, spot prizes and lots more.  It's a great chance to hang out with your team of colleagues and friends and catch up with everyone while giving back and raising funds.

The main event is the Candle of Hope ceremony is held at dusk at 20:15 where the track is lit by candle bags that have been dedicated to those lost to cancer and those fighting the disease. Participants walk the track, reading the messages and sharing in the spirit of the event.

So, grab a few colleagues, classmates, club/society members and sign up a team to fundraise, you can share your Just Giving page on your social media and every €10 adds up.

Every person in TU Dublin Community has been affected by cancer, by either losing, caring, or knowing grandparents, parents, aunties, uncles, cousins, Mum's, Dads, brothers, sisters, friends, or neighbours.

In 2020 alone, 44,000 people in Ireland received a cancer diagnosis, that's 120 people every day hearing the words "you've got cancer" in Ireland, that's 5 people every hour hearing the words "you've got cancer" in Ireland.

Get a team together and let’s help beat cancer.  Join all our TU Dublin teams of students, staff, friends and families walking 5km every day in March or 155km throughout the month to remember those we lost, celebrate those who’ve survived and fight back by raising money for life-saving research and services provided by the Irish Cancer Society.

All the funds raised through sponsorship and fundraising will go to support the Irish Cancer Society's national services and mission to achieve world-class cancer services, working towards fewer people getting CANCER and that those that do- have better outcomes and improved treatment. FIGHT BACK!

Honour every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see the Candle bags decorated with names and sometimes messages to the people they’re dedicated to.. At dusk, the candles are lit in a moving tribute to those who have been lost to the disease. Join us in Grangegorman April 1st

Each Relay is organised by a dedicated local volunteer student and staff committee. Everyone participating in Relay for Life comes together to show that together, we're stronger than cancer.

At a Relay For Life event there are special moments that bring everyone together:

  • Our special guests are our survivors of cancer. Each event begins with their Lap of Honour.
  • Teams set up camp and take it in turns to walk around a track for the duration of the event to show the power of community spirit in the fight to beat cancer.
  • Music, entertainment, and food vendors which adds to a festival feel.
  • A closing ceremony celebrates our achievements and inspires us all to continue the fight.

Everyone! Its all about fighting back against Cancer and we need you!

1 in 3 people will get cancer in their lifetime in Ireland. Unfortunately, this statistic is only rising. WE HAVE TO FIGHT BACK!
