Corporate Social Responsibility

The aim of this module is to enable the student to gain an appreciation of the pertinent issues in relation to Corporate Social Responsibility. To develop the student’s critical thinking ability, critical self-reflection and synthesizing skills in order to effectively formulate and implement corporate social responsibility strategies and policies.

The concept of social responsibility

the duty of care a company has to stakeholders and the environment; the consideration of the overall betterment on society in its decisions and actions; the benefits of being socially responsible and the moral case for behaving socially responsible.

Categories of socially responsible behaviour

: actions to promote workforce diversity; actions to enhance employee well being; actions to protect or enhance the environment; the degree to which the company tries to employ an ethical strategy; actions to better the quality of life of the community; the role of the Government in regulating socially responsible behaviour.

Linking strategy and social responsibility:

the need to match a company’s social responsibility strategy to its core values; business mission; and overall strategy.

The issues regarding the legal; moral and ethical issues in business:

Ethical theory and business practice; rights and obligations of employees and employers; marketing and decisions; ethical issues in international business.
