Module Description: This module introduces Learners to the concepts of management theory and practice, management styles and models and it looks at the functions, tasks and tools of management, and explores the various theories of management and their application to the ways people manage

Module Aim: The aim of this module is to enable the student to critically appraise the contrasting perspectives of structure, operation and management of organisations and interaction among people working in organisations.

Introduction to Management Principles
The nature and importance of management, the functions of management, management levels, management skills.
History of Management Thought
Early management thought, the industrial revolution, the classical approaches, the modern approaches
Management Practice
Managing the future, policy making, forecasting, business plans
The Business Environment
The business environment, the macro environment, competitive analysis, managing the external environment
Planning Procedures
Decision making, manpower planning, strategic planning and implementation
Organising
The nature and importance of organising, components of organisational structure, universal approaches to organisational structure
Control
The nature and importance of control, the control process, types of control, characteristics of effective control, methods of control
Management Styles and Relationships
Leadership, Motivation, Communication

The module will be delivered by means of lectures with the support of video material, guest lecturers, and industry visits. Class discussion, project work and directed study will be involve the learner directly in the class material
