Module Overview

Advanced Analytical Techniques

This module aims to provide the student with knowledge of the theory and principles behind mass spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and electroanalytical techniques. The ability to use the combined techniques of IR, MS and NMR and electrochemistry to identify the structure of simple organic molecules will be a key goal.

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy:

Principles & instrumentation; elucidation of 1H NMR spectra & compound identification. Types of Coupling Patterns

Thermoanalytical methods:

Thermogravimetric analysis; differential scanning calorimetry, applications in pharmaceutical science

Electroanalytical Methods

Linear sweep and cyclic voltammery, stripping voltammetry, potential step methods (chronoamperometry, normal pulse and differential pulse methods) hydrodynamic methods, flow systems, FIA, electrochemical sensors for process monitoring.

Mass Spectroscopy

Fragmentation patterns, secondary ion MS, field desorption MS, interpretation and prediction of MS, problem solving.

Raman Spectroscopy

Introduction to Raman spectroscopy, principles of surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, applications in materials and pharmaceutical analysis
