Module Overview

Thermal Performance of Buildings

This module introduces the learner to the concepts of human comfort within buildings, building energy ratings & performance; energy reduction methods; fabric construction analyses; casual & solar gains in buildings.  The aim of this module is to equip the learner with the fundamental knowledge necessary for basic calculations & assessment of human comfort, building energy performance, fabric thermal performance and solar gains in buildings. It will also prepare the learner for further study in these areas.

The following items will be covered in the module;

1. Human Comfort

Body temperature regulation and heat loss, relative importance of conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation under different conditions as heat loss mechanisms. Numerical expression of conditions for human comfort

2. Energy Performance.

Compliance with TG Part L, elemental & overall heat loss.  The UK EPC & Irish BER certification system.  Investigation of DEAP methodology used & information required.  Calculation process for DEAP.  Sensitivity test using DEAP software.

3. Energy Economics.

Economic impact of energy reduction measures using PBP & NPV.  Calculation of optimum insulation thickness.

4. Fabric Construction Thermal Performance

Calculation of thermal transmittance (homogeneous structures and thermally bridged structures).  Condensation types, sources & control methods used.  Calculate surface & interstitial condensation, plotting of thermal profile, estimate condensation risk, show effects of insulation.

5. Heat Gains.

Introduction to solar gain & other building gains.  Nature of solar radiation, passage through atmosphere, magnitude & variation Direct & diffuse radiation.  Transmission of radiation through glazing, short-wave & long wave.  Solar gain reduction methods.  Calculation of solar gain on the vertical and horizontal planes.  Calculation of effects of solar shading of heat gains.  Sol air temperature calculation.

6. Energy Targets.

Introduction to assessment & setting of energy performance targets for building types.  Use of KPI’s.  Case studies to analyse energy targets and performance results.

The module will use the following teaching and learning methods; lectures, discussion, case study, problem-solving exercises/tutorials, demonstrations, self-directed learning/reading and computer-based learning.
