Professional Practice 1

The aim of this module is to provide a foundational knowledge for students on the concepts of professional practice and accountability. It will introduce the student to the structure of the health service and the position of the laboratory within it. The student will be introduced to the associated professional bodies and their role in regulating professions. Students will be introduced to core proficiencies required for the practice of medical science. Students will learn to be self-aware and understand the need to practice self-care. Students will be introduced to the idea of critical thinking. As part of the 'students learning with communities' SLWC section of the module, students will design, develop and deliver interactive scientific educational demonstrations which can be safely demonstrated to children'.

  • Biomedical science as a profession and codes of conduct. (What a profession is, what it means to be a professional, requirements to become a registered profession).
  • The role of professional and registration bodies.
  • Communication including communication styles (written and oral), communication with others and adopting different styles to deal with different situations.
  • Taking responsibility for one’s self, their actions and their continued education.
  • Teamwork, conflict and confidentiality.
  • Introduction to the scientific method, hypothesis testing and evidence-based practice.
  • The CORU standards of proficiency for Medical Scientists are covered, wholly or in part, in this module within the following criteria 1.Professional Autonomy and Accountability (6,8,10,11,20), 2.Communication, Collaborative practice and teamwork (2,7,8,10,12) and 4.Professional development (1,2,4), 5. Professional Knowledge and skills (19)
