Ocular Biochemistry

The module describes the biochemical structure and functions of selected eye tissues and the biochemistry of vision. The course programme is specifically structured for students who will enter clinical practice, rather than being a conventional biochemistry course suitable for scientists.

Review of water, it’s role as both a solute and solvent in eye tissues.
Review of general structures and properties of proteins in tear film, cornea, lens, aqueous and vitreous.
Review of nature of enzyme catalysis.
Summary of storage and structural lipids.
Review of intermediary metabolism and energy transformations within a living cell.
Glucose metabolism and tissue glycation.
Glucose and protein metabolism in the retina.
Structure and properties of rhodopsins. Comparison of structures and roles of rod and cone cells.
Light transduction and the visual cycle.
