This module will provide the learner with the skills necessary to retrieve and analyse large bioinformatics data sets to address a specific question. It will provide essential skills and knowledge in working with omics data sets such as next generation sequencing and other genome wide omics approaches. The module will also provide instruction in the design of bioinformatics experiments.
Next generation sequencing – experimental design, instrumentation, data types, data generation, data analysis, data presentation
Detection of pathogenic variants at genome level
Data visualisation of WGS level data
Workflows in bioinformatics (including application of programming and task automation)
Use of web based bioinformatics toolkits (e.g. Human Genome Browsers, Bioconductor, gene expression omnibus, Galaxy)
Use of R programming language for biostatistics
A mixture of Lectures, tutorials, computer laboratory workshops and online self-directed learning.
