The purpose of this module is to provide a critical understanding of the systems and theories of control and to analyse the methods of performance evaluation. The module also seeks to provide an appreciation of the behavioural implications of control systems.

Theory of control and the organisation

The need for planning and control;management accounting and control;considerations in the design of management accounting systems.

Cost accumulation for inventory management and profit measurement

Process costing systems; joint-product costing systems.

Budgetary planning and control

Objectives of budgets; the budgeting process (including flexible budgets); responsibility accounting and control reporting;dysfunctional behaviour arising as a result of budgets, management style.

Performance and management control

Performance measurement methods and models; flexible budgeting, standard costing and variance analysis;Activity Based Costing (ABC); non-financial measures of performance.

Measuring managerial performance

Measuring managerial performance; the balanced scorecard; measuring divisional performance, Return on Capital Employed (ROCE), Return on Investment (ROI) and Residual Income (RI).
