Principles of Management (2)

This module explores the application of the theories and practices of effective management central to the successful operation of an enterprise.  Through the engagement with the key management literature and the use of case studies the module provides students with the opportunity to understand, discuss and consider the application of concepts and theories is different management settings. The aims of this module are to, build upon the students’ initial introduction to management and develop a greater understanding of management concepts and techniques necessary in business.  Help foster an understanding of the role and nature of management in national and international business structures and different organisational environments, and develop the key elements of management activity.

The Global Environment for Management

Trends in International Business.  The International Environment.  Competitive Challenges for Managers. Introduction to diversity and multiculturalism.

Strategic Management

Nature of business strategy.  The strategy formulation process.  Strategic decision-making tools.  Current influences on strategic thinking

Managing Change & Innovation:

The nature and importance of change.  Models of change.  Managing strategic change.  An introduction and overview of the role of innovation in management and understand the importance of seeking innovations in key managerial processes and discover strategies for doing so.

Entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurial process and perspectives on entrepreneurial thinking.  New business development process.  Business planning.

Leadership:

Primacy of leadership.  Styles of leadership and company ethos.  Power and influence in organisations.

Group and Team working

Group and team formation and development. Effective team working.

Industry Studies

Case Studies and scenarios on management topics relevant to industries and managerial situations to be integrated into class work and assessment

Instruction will be primarily through lectures and class discussion of salient issues in management, while this will lead to an exposition of the fundamentals of best management practice.  Self-directed learning will be applied to facilitate an awareness of current theory and practice. Case and scenario examples will be used to illustrate a range of managerial situations. 

The delivery of this module will be of a blended learning nature, combining in-person and online delivery of lectures, using a combination of lectures, case studies scenarios, video, class discussion, problem solving exercises and self-directed learning.                                                           

Practising the tasks of managerial analysis and decision-making via use of case studies, scenarios analysis / discussion.
