Module Overview

Business Research Methods

The aim of this module is to give the student/group a chance to focus on an independent journey of inquiry. This module is to enable the student to undertake a learning 'journey' which is largely self-directed and self-motivated, and which is substantially different to the teaching led experience encountered to date. This allows the student, with the subsequent support of an assigned supervisor or mentor, the opportunity to integrate the various dimensions and domains of knowledge acquired (across the Masters programme), as well as utilising the Business Research Methods acquired in the Business Research Methods Module, and so becomes a capstone module. It also offers the chance to concentrate on, and specialise in, a module discipline and/or sectoral field, which may be of interest to the student and which may subsequently become a focus of career aspirations. This module also aims to encourage students to develop a commitment to independent research. The aim of this module is to facilitate students toward understanding the relevance underpinning research with a strong appreciation for research rigour. This module will help students prepare their Research Proposal and to equip them with knowledge of the research approaches that they may choose.

This course will be delivered through our online virtual learning environment, Brightspace. The module leader will post a lecture (webinar, video, notes etc.) for each topic on the syllabus. This will be supplemented with active discussion panels, specialised workshops, interactive reading, and the standard structured reading that is allocated.

Lectures will provide the basis for starting research toward completing the Research Proposal, this will provide a baseline for students as they transition to their dissertation aspect of the programme.

The method of instruction is designed to ensure and support the student so he/she will be in a position to select a research topic, choose a research paradigm and progress to a final Dissertation.

The assessment of this module is designed to allow students to draw from their experience on the work-placement programme to inform their chosen research field.

Students are expected to hold and manage regular meetings with their supervisor and to engage with him/her in the development and completion of their research.

Throughout the module, students are encouraged to undertake independent reading to supplement and consolidate the theoretical content and to broaden their individual knowledge and understanding of the subject.
