Basic business with IT Skills

Module Descriptor 
The module is an introduction to basic business concepts and gives an outline of the fundamentals of business management. It includes an introduction to the role of accounting in business and basic business management including HR management. It develops financial and marketing skills needed to ensure good business management and business growth. Relevant IT skills are developed throughout the module with emphasis on applications in the field of pharmacy. By providing the principles, tools and methodologies it aims to develop an appreciation and basic understanding of business.

Module Aims
To ensure the students are familiar with basic fundamentals of business management and basic concepts in business. To develop the students’ knowledge of various business performance measures and how they are used to monitor and drive business performance. To enable the student to fully engage with the various business aspects required to manage a successful business through practical examples and a business project. To ensure the development of IT skills and basic accountancy skills. To ensure students are familiar with the foundation in HR management.

Microsoft Word to construct and format a document and experimental report

Delivery will be in a computer lab

Workshops that combine a didactic methodology to establish a foundation of knowledge and use of video online material to provide visual learning support. Time is allocated for in-class discussions

Use of modified problem based learning formats

IT training activities with applications drawn from pharmacy practice and science modules.

Examples include Excel for accounting, software for stock management, scientific data analysis (calibration

curves, etc) (10 contact hours ; 10 self-directed)
