This module is designed for students who have no previous knowledge of the language. It aims to introduce the four language skills and give learners a background knowledge of France and the French-speaking countries.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Asking and responding to simple questions in areas of immediate relevance.Recognising and using basic phrases relating to self, family and immediate surroundings.

The development of Reading and Writing skills

Reading short simple texts and understanding familiar names, words and basic phrases. Writing a short, simple postcard or email and filling in a form with personal details.

Grammar and Structures

Definite and indefinite articles; C'est - il y a;possessive adjectives my, your, his, her;masculine and feminine singular and plural agreement of pronouns, nouns and adjectives; Regular -er verbs; frequently used irregular verbs to include être and avoir; frequently used reflexive verbs; simple negative forms; simple question forms.

Life in Contemporary French-speaking countries

Interactive hour with a focus on the target culture:Physical and political geography; Cities.

Learning and teaching will take place through the use of lectures, presentations and role plays exercises in the module. In addition to using text based material, students will be expected to make extensive use of relevant websites, external online audio and video resources referred throughout the course.
