This module is designed to develop the student’s language proficiency, in particular in the area of companies in German-speaking countries. It also explores themes relating to culture and society in the German-speaking world.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Asking and giving information about a company. Delivery of a company presentation. Identifying key information in pieces of authentic spoken language

The development of Reading and Writing skills

Reading texts consisting mainly of high frequency everyday and work-related language. Identifying specific information in a variety of texts. Describing departmental role and responsibilities.

Topic 1: Business Language

German companies in Ireland. Company profiles / departmental roles and activities. Working conditions in German-speaking countries. Phone skills: organising an appointment, leaving a message, and understanding pre-recorded messages.

Topic 2: Grammar Workshops

• Revision of tenses• Conjunctions and word order• Um ... zu• Infinitives with zu• Imperatives

Topic 3: Life in contemporary German-speaking countries

Aspects of German culture and society, to include important dates throughout the year, will be studied through the use of written text, film and Internet resources.

Learning and teaching will take place through the use of lectures, presentations and role plays exercises in the module. In addition to using text based material, students will be expected to make extensive use of relevant websites, external online audio and video resources referred throughout the course.
