This module is designed to provide students with an overview in the target language of trade between Germany and Ireland, to develop advanced oral and written language skills and to consolidate students’ understanding of life and society in contemporary German-speaking countries.

The development of Listening and Speaking skills

Discussing contemporary issues; Supporting and sustaining personal viewpoints in conversation; Identifying relevant information in authentic TV, radio and spoken Internet materials; Interacting with clients on the telephone with a degree of spontaneity and fluency.

The development of Reading and Writing skills

Reading and locating relevant information, ideas and opinions in long and specialised articles and reports; Producing clear, detailed text on a range of subjects to include all aspects of business correspondence; Writing essays, summaries and commentaries on contemporary issues, giving reasons in support of or against a particular position.

Business Language: German/Irish Trade

Profile of the German economy: key sectors/industries, main economic trends and developments; Analysis of German/Irish trade relationship: identification of main import/export products and markets between Ireland and Germany; Business correspondence relating to import and export; Advanced telephone skills.

Grammar and Structures

Review of cases; Review of tenses; Review of word order.

Life in contemporary German-speaking countries

Aspects of German culture and society will be studied through the use of text, film and Internet resources. Suggested topics include: The environmentTourismThe political system in Germany
