Computer Aided Design

This module aims to develop the student’s design skills as applied to modern CAD packages.The student is provided with the opportunity of using an industry standard applicationproviding for schematic capture, simulation and design of a printed circuit board (PCB).

Schematic Capture:

Schematic libraries and library selection; busses, bus tapsand wire connections; terminal connections; symbol creation; documentationand revision numbering.

Simulation and Analysis

Computer-aided circuit analysis and simulation: purpose, importance in the R&Dprocess, introduction to PSPICE and other simulation tools. Types of analysis, bias point, DC sweep, frequency response, transient, etc. Analogue and Digital simulations.

PCB Design:

Layout package: Single sided and Double sided boards.Through-hole and surface-mount components, creation or use of componentlibraries. Manipulating pad size, drill hole etc.Manual placement, Autorouting and manual tidy up.Adjusting trace width, clearance etc.Designing with surface mounted devices.Producing completed art-work (may include work for Project, or similarexercise).
