The purpose of this module is to introduce the learner to the principles of youth work as a distinct value based profession working in partnership with young people. The module introduces students to the principles and fundamental skills, values, and theory required to practice as a effective youth worker. Learners will explore the history of youth work and youth work organisations in an Irish context.

Defining and understanding Youth Work
Contemporary models of youth work, current approaches, relationship with young people. Good youth work practice.
Child Protection
National legislation and child protection policies. Legal obligations relevant to child protection and welfare. Local child protection policies. HSE Introduction to Children First E-learning programme.
The module is delivered face to face in the classroom and within lectures. Students must attend and participate in self directed learning and produce a portfolio of work in semester 1. In semester 2 students are required to plan implement and evaluate a small piece of group work.
