Personal and Professional Communication in Community and Youth Work

This module will support learners in developing a range of of academic skills and competencies to underpin success as a community development and youth work student at college and at work. To provide learners who are new to 3rd level with a range of skills and techniques designed to support their learning and on-going development as part of a broad, diverse student community and as independent learners. This will be achieved through the development and application of key practical skills comprising of the following themes: Self-awareness and Introduction to Reflective Practice, time Management, Personal Organisation and Study, Oral, Academic Writing Skills, Citing and Referencing of Sources and presentation (in academic contexts), Foundation PC skills. To foster a sense of inquisitiveness in students and to enable them to prepare for lifelong learning negotiating personal and professional values.

Induction to Community Development and Youth Work

Learners will engage in a weeklong induction specific to Community Development and Youth Work. The programme will assist learners to reflect on their values, their life journey and their motivation for this programme of education. Learners will be exposed to a variety of practice settings to support them to visualise their professional self at the end of the academic journey.

Reflective Practice

Learners are supported to reflect on their experiences, behaviours, actions and thinking in light of their learning on the programme, through discussion, reflective writing and journaling.

Academic Inquiry and Output

Preparing for and completing assignments/ research – sourcing literature, materials for study and written work, using the library and TU Dublin Referencing Standards /Guidelines

Skills for Community Development and Youth Work Practice

Participation, discussion and conduct in class / Group work / academic writing / presentations/debate/reflection
