Module Overview

Critical Skills in Youth Work Practice

This module aims to develop the learners understanding of the complexities of the lived experiences of young people and the many issues which impact upon their opportunities and outcomes. The module will also encourage students to think strategically about youth work in both a local, national and global context in order to anticipate and react quickly to issues which affect youth work provision and practice. Learners will design, develop and deliver youth work programmes/activities within a concurrent 200 hour fieldwork placement with approved youth work providers. Furthermore, students will be helped to develop critical thinking ability in order to analyse how funding streams affect youth work provision and practice. This module will help students to develop an understanding of the meaning and importance of governance and compliance within youth work organisations.

Youth work provision and funding

Differing forms of Youth Work provision (targeted youth work vs mainstream) - understanding targeted Youth Work (Justice/ NEET/ Drugs and alcohol etc) - Funding sources and agencies - funding agencies, implications, requirements for funding, reporting requirements, shrinking provisions for mainstream Youth Work nationally.

Role of Youth Work

Boundaries - Youth Work as a form of social control or social change? - targets and measurable outcomes/ quantifying the impact of Youth Work - evidence based practice - recognising the role of youth work when working in collaboration with other stakeholders - legal, organisational and ethical considerations - accountability.

Youth Work in a Digital Space

Digital technologies for informal learning - understanding and utilising the digital age as a means of youth work engagement - using digital media and technologies safely and effectively in Youth Work Settings - examining online youth work - assisting young people to critically analyse online information and interaction - legal, ethical and moral issues and implications - Innovating and enhancing practice - digital identities - digital literacy - designing digital activities

Governance

What is the Charities Governance Code? – How does this impact on youth work policy and provision? - Compliance with law and regulation - Principles of governance and core standards - Oversight and accountability - applying good governance within fieldwork practice.

Youth Work Strategy and Practice

What is a strategic plan? - Setting priorities and working towards common goals - considerations and understanding the process - aligning activities and allocating resources in line with organisations strategic plan - looking ahead and anticipating emerging issues -designing, delivering and evaluating bespoke youth work programme within fieldwork.
