Module Overview

Civil Engineering Practice

This module is concerned with the role of the civil engineer / technologist as an employee and manager, and the concept of the construction industry as a system that imports ideas, information, energy and materials from the environment and transforms them, using people and machines, into outputs such as buildings, bridges and roads. This system is, however, subject to the constraints that are imposed on construction engineering projects by time, resources, health and safety and the law. Therefore, the module not only examines the construction industry as a system but also studies how engineers and technologists can assess and manage the constraints within which this system must operate. Global issues are playing an increasingly important role in our lives. To enable engineers to make better informed decisions, an understanding of these issues is vital.

Management techniques used to organize activities and resources in construction engineering projects are examined. By studying aspects of contract law and management through lectures and case-studies, students are made aware of the engineer's role as a planner, as a professional offering services to a client in the construction industry, and as a manager of, not only equipment, but also of people. The importance of health and safety in construction is emphasised by a study of the current legislation and an examination of case studies. Increased awareness of employment law is essential for everyone working in the construction industry.
