The purpose of this module is to introduce the learner to the industrial process stages that are used in the manufacture of API’s and fine chemicals. This will assist the student in career development for professional placement in pharma and chemical manufacturing industries.
Fluid flow, rheology types and measurement.
Mixing and agitation
Chemical and physical separation processes including distillation, crystallisation, evaporation, drying, sedimentation and filtration.
Solids handling and operations involving particulate solids including size reduction and mixing. .
Formulation processes for tablet and capsule manufacture from selection of excipients, dispensing, blending, drying, granulation, compression, coating and packaging.
Methods of preparing alternative dosage forms such as solutions, suspensions, emulsions and creams and powders.
Sustainable Development goals for chemical and pharmaceutical processes.
A selection of laboratory practicals will reflect this material and build on student learning.
