Civil Engineering Work Based Experience

Work based learning is a period of planned work experience which is completed within an organisation in the civil or structural engineering market sector.

This is proposed as an elective module to provide the student with an opportunity to gain valid ECTS credits for appropriate and relevant civil engineering work experience after Year 2 of their programme. The work experience will be for a minimum 8-week period in the civil / structural engineering industry and will cover one of three aspects; Transportation, Water / Wastewater, Structures.

Preplacement

Students will be provided with careers talks before the industry work experience which will include preparing for a job search; Writing a CV and covering letter, Interview technique

During the work experience period the student is encouraged to obtain exposure to tasks under the following headings.

Communication

  • Attendance at meetings (both internal and with Clients)
  • Attendance at presentations from external companies
  • Inclusion in company-wide communications
  • Inclusion in project team meetings
  • Site visits

 

Self-directed work, team work & application of theoretical knowledge

The student should be included within a project team and provided with opportunities to carry out tasks both under supervision and in some cases with limited guidance.  The tasks should enable the student to apply theoretical knowledge and or drawing work to various engineering problems. 

The company

It is envisaged that the student will be involved in the QA procedures associated with the business, including but not limited to the role of management, HR functions and Health and Safety.

Student diary

The student will be required to keep a portfolio to show evidence of the work completed during the placement.  The student will regularly reflect on the learning experience within the portfolio. 

 

 

Presentations on finding a work placement, writing a CV and preparation for work experience in industry (4 contact hours)

Work experience - self-directed learning.

Although it is expected that the student will undertake at least 300 hours of work experience, it is acknowledged that not all of this will be within a learning experience.

It is assumed that the student will spend approximately 12 hours per week learning new material, preparing the portfolio and reflecting on the experience.

There will be a 1-hour interview / meeting between the student and School staff during the work placement
