Communications II (Business Communications and the Business Environment)

This module has two elements (1) It facilitates further consolidation and additional development of student’s communication skills from the level achieved in Communications 1. The communication challenges presented are more complex and less welldefined problems than those presented in COMM1103. The practical aspects of the module enables the students to further develop and apply research, numerate analysis and written/oral communications skills in the context of a contemporary business environment. (approx. 50%) (2) It introduces students to the business environment and explores elements of the business environment likely to influence a Technicians/Technologists career. This enables the development of an awareness and critical understanding of key elements and important dynamics operating within the contemporary business environment which are likely to be relevant to their professional lives. (Approx. 50%)

Lectures involving up to date case-studies and class discussions will be used . Students will work in class in groups and individually in completing specific class activities to exemplify theory.  Students will complete various group and individual assignments to practice skills and apply theory in analysing real-world problems, these assignments will be supported during dedicated class times. A Careers workshop will be introduced to help prepare students for their industrial placement in Semester 2. Guest lecturer from Library resources will be invited to re-affirm good research techniques and how to identify good research resources, critically review technical information and construct a comprehensive literature review. Guest speakers, where appropriate, will be invited to focus on key aspects of module content for example and not limited to – effective design using a structured approach, employment law, industrial relations, the business environment basic understanding, and data analytics.
