Control Loops

An overview of commercial and industrial control systems used in thermal energy systems. Types of control systems. Open loop, closed loop, two state, proportional, three term, logical and rule based control. Elements of a control system. Block diagram representation and calculations.

Loop Tuning and performance calculations

Calculation of error performance and transient response based on block diagram. Proportional control and three term controllers. Methods of Tuning, Ziegler Nichols method and auto-tune features.

Transducers Sensors Signal Conversion

Sensors and transducers encountered in thermal control systems characteristics and operational considerations including range, accuracy, response time etc. Analog to Digital Conversion and Digital to Analog Conversion systems. Data Acquisition.

Basic PLC operations

Implementation of combinational logic and latch operations with PLCs

Sequential type PLC problems

Implementation of rule based control using PLCs Programming for logical state type problems. Programming sequential type problems with counters and timers.
