The aim of this module is to introduce students to key concepts and debates, both historical and contemporary in the area of cultural theory. It also aims to enable learners to apply these ideas in reflecting on the nature of contemporary Irish culture and society.

Module Content

This course will begin with an overview of a number of cultural theories and in later weeks use these as a theoretical framework in examining various aspects and themes relevant to Irish culture and society.

Approaches to Cultural Theory

Toward a definition of the concept of culture; an introduction to the intellectual strands (Conservative critique; Marxism; Culturalism; Structuralism; Gender and Intersectionality Studies; Critical Race Theory Postmodernism and the networked society); questions of culture, ideology, subjectivity and identity particularly in relation to increasingly technologized information environments.
